Charles Stanley, founder of In Touch Ministries and long-time pastor of First Baptist Church in Atlanta, US, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 90.
Stanley’s role as a faithful defender of the Scriptures was a trait admired by Billy Graham, who backed Stanley’s run for Southern Baptist Convention president. He served two terms, from 1984–1986.
“I appreciate his faithfulness in unashamedly teaching the Word of God,” Franklin Graham said. “For many who travel, and also during COVID-19 when people couldn’t attend their own churches, Dr. Stanley’s message on television not only inspired us but fed us spiritually.”
Charles Stanley participated in Billy Graham’s 1994 Atlanta Crusade and was in attendance for Billy Graham’s funeral in Charlotte, North Carolina, US, on March 2, 2018.
Stanley was the author of more than 70 books, including several New York Times bestsellers, and his sermons are produced by In Touch Ministries and broadcast in 180 nations and translated into 55 languages. In 1988, Stanley was inducted into the National Religious Broadcaster’s Hall of Fame.
“His teaching was solid—He did not compromise on God’s Word like so many others do today,” Franklin Graham said. “God used him to impact so many lives around the world, and he will be greatly missed.”
