After Unspeakable Tragedy, Venezuelans Are Met With Compassion in the Name of Christ

Whether people are searching through debris, receiving medical treatment, or filling up a water jug, chaplains are meeting them where they are with the comfort of Jesus Christ.

In Venezuela, the emotional aftershocks of grief and anxiety have rocked thousands of lives. Billy Graham Rapid Response Team (BG-RRT) chaplains are listening to stories of deep pain and loss and offering people the hope of Jesus Christ, who “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3, NKJV).

Chaplain coordinator Hiram Sanchez met two office managers who were concerned about their employees. One staff member died in the earthquake, two resigned and moved away, and a pervasive feeling of fear hung over those who remained in the workplace. Sanchez asked the managers if they would like to hear Good News from Jesus, and they invited him to speak in front of the company.

Twenty employees initially expressed interest, but the next day, 40 showed up, filling the room and spilling into the hallway.

The chaplain told the hurting group that their feelings—loss, confusion, dread—were all normal. Although it may take time, they would be able to continue on with the Lord’s help. God has a purpose for each one of them, Sanchez said, not just to recover from this tragedy, but ultimately to begin a personal relationship with Him.

Everyone listened intently.

After praying for the group, the chaplain asked if any of them would like to accept Christ into their lives and put their trust in Him. Ten people said yes, including one of the managers the chaplain spoke to the day before. That manager also asked Sanchez if each of their 205 employees could have a copy of “Steps to Peace With God,” a booklet from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association that explains the Gospel.

Only the Lord can change fear into faith, and He’s doing it even in Venezuela’s darkest moments.

Will you pray with us for the many who are searching for hope? Ask God to encourage them with His love and guide them to a relationship with their Heavenly Father through faith in Jesus Christ.

More than 16,000 people were injured in the double earthquakes on June 24. Chaplains are listening to their stories of physical and emotional pain and offering spiritual healing from Christ, the Great Physician.
Many injured Venezuelans are receiving medical care in field hospitals. One man (not pictured), who sustained chest and arm injuries in the earthquake, accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour after a conversation with a chaplain.
Almost 20,000 people of all ages are living in makeshift camps since losing their homes. Chaplains listen while they process what’s next, comforting and praying with them—and sharing God’s love through materials like “Steps to Peace With God.”
The death toll stands around 4,500, with thousands more still missing. Many Venezuelans feel lost, but one local woman told the chaplain team that their presence was “like a spring in the desert.”
Following a chaplain’s prayer with her, one grieving woman said, “This has been the most comforting conversation I’ve had since the earthquake.”
