A Decision That Echoes Into Eternity

On the final night of his Gospel outreach near Gulfport, Mississippi, Will Graham told the audience: “There’s some of you here today that think that God’s left you. God never left you. … God’s chasing after you.”

Mississippi’s Gulf Coast looks like a postcard from paradise—miles of white sand beaches, colourful hotels, and entertainment as far as the eye can see.

People often come here searching for fulfilment in fun and relaxation. But Sunday, at the Gulf Coast Celebration of Hope, Will Graham explained that there’s only one place where you can find what your heart desires.

“Purpose isn’t a place,” Graham told the crowd of 1,600 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center. “Fulfilment won’t be found in a place. It’s found in a person, and His name is Jesus.”

For most of Angela’s life, she had been looking for something that would bring her peace. Her broken family situation left her with psychological scars, and she had nearly taken her own life three times. When she attended church, she noticed her emotional state improving. But then Angela would slip right back into despair, feeling lost and without hope.

“There are some of you here today who are sincerely going in the wrong direction,” Graham told the audience. “You’re going to have to make a choice tonight if you’re going to get off the road you’re on and come toward God.”

“God has given us rules to live by—it’s God’s Word!” Graham said. “If you want the best of life, then you want to follow these rules.” Those who made a decision for the Lord received a free Bible to help them grow to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ.

Graham began the night by sharing a story of someone who lost their way: the Prodigal Son. Just like Angela, the son chased after other things to fill the longing inside him. But when he finally looked up from his life of sin, he realized how far he had wandered.

“He was going his own way, and he found it was miserable,” Graham said. “God’s saying, ‘You drifted from Me. It’s time for you to come back.’”

Angela knew she didn’t want to feel distant from God any longer. When Graham invited the crowd to publicly respond to Jesus by walking to the front, she stood right by the edge of the stage. Rosemary, a prayer volunteer, met her there and wrapped her arms around her. Angela joyfully prayed in repentance and faith to leave her past behind her and find new life in Christ.

“She no longer has to carry those burdens,” Rosemary said. “She can put them on God’s shoulder.”

A New Wave of Faith for the Gulf Coast

The Celebration also brought much-needed encouragement to Harrison County, which—according to recent reports—has seen a decline in Christianity over the past 30 years.

“When God moves, it’s going to cause people to come back into the church,” said Treani Robertson, a leader at Christ the Redeemer Church of God International. She explained how many people walked away during COVID and never returned.

“We’re praying that this brings a great revival to the Gulf Coast area,” added her husband, Carlos, who serves alongside her.

Carlos knows what it looks like when God moves. When he was 12, he saw Billy Graham preach in Mississippi, and it left a lasting impact on his life. He remembers being surrounded by young people who have since grown up—and have been praying for the Celebration and the next generation.

God is answering their pleas.

Heidi, a mom of five, felt God calling her to attend the Celebration as a prayer volunteer, patiently walking through the steps of salvation with new believers. As she attended the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s Christian Life and Witness Course and read through the discipleship materials, her whole family gained a new urgency for the Gospel. Her kids invited several friends to come with them to the event, and two of those young men accepted Christ on the first night of the Celebration.

Sunday evening, she recalled how one of them sat in the stands the night before with tears in his eyes. “He felt like the entire sermon while Will was speaking was just directly at him,” Heidi explained. “He was very convicted—it was a life-changing experience.”

Her recent training has motivated Heidi to be more vocal about sharing the Gospel. Just this past week, she taught children’s Sunday school for the first time, feeling confident as she told them about Jesus.

“It seems like maybe a new chapter opening,” Heidi said. “I’m really excited.”

Will you pray for new Christians in Mississippi as they grow stronger in their faith and connect with local churches? Ask God to use them as He draws many more across the region to salvation in Jesus Christ.

It’s not too late to change direction in life and have peace in your own heart. Find out how.
